Improving upon the PowerBook 100's portability (its immediate predecessor and Apple's third-smallest laptop), the Duo came in seven different models. They were the Duo 210, 230, 250, 270c, 280, 280c, and 2300c, with the 210 and 230.

Duo for Office 365 (O365) is now being offered to all faculty and staff, as well as students who access HIPAA data. Duo 2-factor authentication is the recommended method of helping to prevent unauthorized access to your email, One Drive, SharePoint, and other O365 services.

What you need to know before signing up

Duo for O365 only works with applications that allow for what is called modern authentication. IS&T teams from several departments have tested and approved the following applications for use with Duo:

Google duo for mac air
  • Outlook 2016 and 2019 for PC, Outlook 2016 and 2019 for Mac
  • Outlook 2013 for PC (however it requires a registry edit before it will work)
  • Outlook app for iOS and Android (phone and tablet)
  • Apple Mail app for iOS (default email application for iPhone & iPad)
  • Apple Mail for OS X (must be Mac OS 10.14 (Mojave) or higher, your existing account will need to be deleted and re-added after you have signed up for Duo)
  • Skype for Business PC and Mac
  • Skype for Business iOS (phone and tablet)
  • Online Web Access for O365 (OWA) for Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari and Firefox- this includes all O365 applications including Mail, SharePoint, OneDrive, etc.
  • One Drive for Business Sync Client, PC and Mac

If you use any of the applications above, please sign up for Duo for O365.

The following applications will NOT work with Duo for O365, as they do not provide for modern authentication:

  • Outlook for PC 2010 and prior
  • Outlook 2011 for Mac and all versions of MS Entourage
  • Apple Mail for OS X laptop or desktop, versions 10.13 and prior
  • Android Mail (native mail app for phone and tablet)
  • Thunderbird, Pine, Eurdora, etc.

If you sign up for Duo and try to use any of the above applications, you will not be able to receive your mail at all, the application will fail to connect.

If you have multiple BU O365 email accounts that you manage thru Outlook, we do not recommend switching to Duo at this time. If the only BU O365 email account you have is your primary BU work account, then you should not encounter any issues.

Reminder: If you have Duo linked to your office phone (rather than the Duo app on your mobile device) and you are away from your office, you will be unable to sign on to Office 365 and access your email, One Drive, etc. We recommend that you use the Duo app on a mobile device when signing up for Duo for O365.

Troubleshooting

The most common troubleshooting steps can be found below. Please note that once your account has been enabled for Duo, depending on the application you are using to connect to Office365, you may not get prompted to authenticate with Duo for a few days or longer. This is because the credentials you use to authenticate may already be cached by the application.

If you still have trouble, or do not see the application you are using below, please contact your local IT support or email ithelp@bu.edu.

  1. Verify you are using one of the supported browsers as listed below. Any other browser is not supported.
    • Chrome
    • Firefox
    • Safari
    • Internet Explorer
    • Edge
  2. Clear your browser cache
  3. Close your browser completely, then try logging in again.
  1. Make sure you are using the latest version of Skype for Business:
    • Windows: 2016 or 2019
    • Mac: Version 16.0 or above

You can find instructions on downloaded the latest version on our Get Skype for Business page.

  2. Sign out of Skype for Business, then log back in.
  1. Make sure you are using the latest version of Skype for Business, check the app store for updates.
  2. Once you have logged in and have sent the Duo request, when the notification comes back, click and hold on the notification bar to approve so that you remain in the Skype for Business app. If you exit the Skype for Business app and go to the Duo app to approve, the approval will not go through. You will then need to authenticate twice more with your credentials before accessing Skype for Business (though you will not need to do another Duo request).
  1. Make sure you are using the latest version of the Outlook app, check the app store for updates
  2. Delete and re-add your account:
    1. Go to Settings, then select the account you want to delete.
    2. Select Remove Account.
    3. Select From Device, (removes the account, but keeps the data) or From Device & Remote Data, (removes the account and all the information related to that account).
    4. Add the account again.
  1. Your device must be iOS version 11.3 or greater to be supported.
  2. Delete and re-add your account.
