Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)

Use Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) with displays and other devices that connect using either a Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) cable or USB-C cable. You can also connect a USB-C power adapter and cable to charge your notebook computer. If you have a device that doesn't connect to this port, you might be able to use an adapter to connect it.

These Mac models have Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports:

Jun 29, 2017  I just bought the new MacBook with the usb c input. I use an audio mixer that outputs through a 6-pin FireWire cable. I have the usb c to standard usb adapter. I have a dongle to convert 6-pin firewire to standard usb. When I try to plug in through this chain, I get a message that my USB ports are being disabled because they're sucking too much. Connect your Thunderbolt-equipped Mac to a FireWire device with the Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter.Small and compact, it connects to the Thunderbolt (also works with Thunderbolt 2, but will be limited to Thunderbolt speeds) port on your Mac computer, giving you a FireWire 800 port that supplies up to 7W for bus-powered peripherals like hard drives and audio devices. So I contacted support again and after 4 hours they told me Windows is no longer going to support the Firewire adapter because it is obsolete. Apple still sells the Thunderbolt Firewire adapter and is supported on Mac, so it is not obsolete. I want to know why Windows will no longer provide an IEEE1394 driver for this device.

  1. After a little over 2 years of light use-estimated at about 3 hours per day for the year- the external drives along the daisy chain started having connectivity and random unmounting of volumes issues. I finally swapped a fresh Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter into the line, and all issues disappeared. Buy one, and then buy a spare.

If your Mac has more than one port that looks like these, each port supports ThunderBolt 3 and USB-C.

USB-C

Use USB-C with displays and other devices that connect using a USB-C cable. You can also connect a USB-C power adapter and cable to charge your notebook computer. If you have a device that doesn't connect to this port, you might be able to use an adapter to connect it.

MacBook models introduced in 2015 or later have a single USB-C port. This port doesn't support Thunderbolt devices.

Hdmi Adapter For Mac Desktop

If your Mac has only one port that looks like this, it supports USB-C but not Thunderbolt.

Thunderbolt

Use Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 with displays and other devices that connect using a Thunderbolt cable.

These Mac models have Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 ports:

  • MacBook Pro introduced in 2011 through 2015
  • MacBook Air introduced in 2011 through 2017
  • Mac mini introduced in 2011 through 2014
  • iMac introduced in 2011 through 2015
  • Mac Pro introduced in 2013

Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 are not the same as Mini DisplayPort (they have the same shape, but use different symbols on the cable and port). However, this port does support Mini DisplayPort for video output, so you can use a Mini DisplayPort cable to connect a Mini DisplayPort display.

Mini DisplayPort

Use Mini DisplayPort with displays that connect using a Mini DisplayPort cable.

These Mac models have Mini DisplayPort:

  • MacBook Pro introduced in late 2008 through 2010
  • MacBook Air introduced in late 2008 through 2010
  • Mac mini introduced in 2009 and 2010
  • iMac introduced in 2009 and 2010
  • Mac Pro introduced in 2009 through 2012

Mini DisplayPort is not the same as Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 (they have the same shape, but use different symbols on the cable and port).

USB-A

Use USB-A with devices that connect using a USB cable. USB ports are sometimes known by the USB specification of the port, such as USB 2 or USB 3.

At a guess, if you're talking about Firewire then yes there is one. Apple makes one. Don't know if it works. $64. yes-you are indeed right. there are different kinds of Firewire plugs-standard one (sideways U shaped), Firewire 400 (4 pin) and Firewilre 800 (dunno) . My suggestion to you would be to take a picture of the soundcard's plug, take it with you to the store, and ask the person there :' I want an adapter that will do Thunderbolt to this' and then show him/her the picture. If he/she is smart and experienced enough (and they probably are) they can recognize what kind of firewire socket you have and if there's a thunderbolt adapter for it, or if you can make it work somehow. There's also the option of a Thunderbolt dock which has Firewire ports built into it (among other ones)
